For LGBTQ+ individuals, it\u2019s an attack and <strong>a curse<\/strong>. The practices of conversion therapy have been rejected multiple times by mainstream medical and mental health organizations for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Psychological Association, <em>\u201cSame-sex sexual attractions, behavior and orientations per se are normal and positive variants of human sexuality \u2014 in other words, they do not indicate either mental or developmental disorders.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;Read about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/lgbt\/resources\/sexual-orientation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APA Task Force Report on Appropriate Therapeutic Response to Sexual Orientation<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, because of the mainstream bigoted thoughts that gay people are mentally ill, some people are still <strong>pushing these discredited practices<\/strong>. Even if the proven false claims into this therapy successfully changing <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/gender-expression-vs-gender-identity-the-nuances\">one\u2019s gender identity<\/a> or s*xual orientation exist, it still surfaces intermittently over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Target<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The common target of these conversion therapies is <strong>gay and transgender individuals<\/strong>. Since teens and children are still under the guardianship of their parents and still can\u2019t decide a lot of things for themselves, the LGBTQ+ youth is specifically the most common target. There are many techniques done in this type of therapy. Some deal with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hypnosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lobotomy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S*x, s*xual therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>which will be discussed more in-depth later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transgender Conversion Therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While gay conversion therapy focuses on the<strong> \u201creparation\u201d of an individual\u2019s s*xual orientation<\/strong>, transgender conversion therapy is more in tune with changing one\u2019s gender identity (for the gender roles to be based on biological s*x).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Conversion Therapy is Done (Techniques and Methods)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the methods and techniques of this therapy have evolved. Because it\u2019s considered pseudo-science, organizations have the freedom to be more creative with their conversion approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behavioral Modification<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before 1973, homosexuality was considered <strong>a mental disorder<\/strong>. This technique was said to \u201cstrengthen heterosexual feelings\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Douglas Haldeman, a famous American psychologist sees this type of technique as valid to be <strong>called torture<\/strong>. He also affirms that it\u2019s ineffective as instead of the individuals being successfully \u201cconverted\u201d, they are traumatized, shamed, and conflicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ex-Gay Ministries<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some don\u2019t consider these ministries <strong>as part of conversion therapy<\/strong>. However, the things that they do in their movements all share the goal of changing an individual\u2019s s*xual orientation or gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"461\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/Ex-Gay_Ministries-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Holy bible\" class=\"wp-image-2578\" style=\"width:280px;height:374px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/Ex-Gay_Ministries-edited.jpg 461w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/Ex-Gay_Ministries-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The movements that these ministries partake in are usually based on the <strong>experiences of ex-homosexual<\/strong> people who got cured by the power of religion. Although activities have been ceased in June 2013 with several board members apologizing to the LGBTQ+ community, ministries like these are still making comebacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reparative Therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The term <strong>reparative therapy<\/strong> is synonymous with <strong>conversion therapy<\/strong>. A reparative therapy\u2019s technique often includes some sort of counseling to get rid of \u201cunwanted same-s*x attraction\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">S*x Therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This method is a bit more sensory as it <strong>requires copulation<\/strong>. This therapy was performed in the \u201970s by William Masters and Virginia Johnson. According to him, the distinction that Masters and Johson created between \u201cconversion\u201d (helping homosexual men who have not experienced heterosexual s*x) and \u201creversion\u201d (urging men who have experienced heterosexual s*x and s*xual attractions for women to go back to heterosexuality) wasn\u2019t well explained and founded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the patients labeled gay may not have been homosexual as only <strong>17% who participated<\/strong> identified EXCLUSIVELY homosexual. The remaining <strong>83%<\/strong> were predominantly in the range of heterosexuality and bisexuality. He concludes that the conversion done wasn\u2019t successful as it only strengthened the heterosexual responsiveness of the patients who were already bisexual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lobotomy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>From the \u201840s to \u201850s, U.S. neurologist Walter Freeman made <strong>ice-pick lobotomy<\/strong> a popular treatment for homosexuality. The method was so unsuccessful that it left thousands of <strong>patients severely disabled<\/strong> for the rest of their lives. Lives all for a claim lacking scientific evidence or enough evidence to support this massacre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[[SIGNUP]]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risks of Conversion Therapy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, the reparative techniques are quite unsuccessful and have been debunked and discredited multiple times by experts. There are <strong>no benefits<\/strong> to this kind of therapy.
