This term has been quite popular and <strong>has been linked to many personalities<\/strong> in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this term has negative connotations to it. If you are a transgender woman, <strong>you must know its meaning<\/strong> and how the individuals pertained by it, can cause you or other trans people harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/the-beginner-trans-ally-guide\">you are an ally<\/a> who cares about transgender women, keep reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a TERF?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before going forward, please know that this guide was <strong>created to spread awareness<\/strong>. If you are labeled one, it simply means that you are a feminist who do not see transgender women to be equal with cisgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disagreeing in certain areas when it comes to recognizing cisgender and transgender women does not mean that you\u2019re already one. You are only <strong>considered one<\/strong> if you invalidate the womanhood of transgender women in all aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The term<\/strong> was popularized by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vivsmythe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viv Smythe<\/a>. She is a trans-inclusive cisgender woman blogger. In 2008, she wrote a blog post responding to <strong>the Michigan Womyn\u2019s Music Festival\u2019s Policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her post, she shed light and displeasure with radical feminists excluding trans women and how they\u2019re negatively impacting the transgender community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transadvocate.com\/terf-what-it-means-and-where-it-came-from_n_13066.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2014 interview with <em>The TransAdvocate <\/em>about her post<\/a>, she said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#dcb6ff\"><em>\u201cIt was meant to be a deliberately technically neutral description of an activist grouping. We wanted a way to distinguish TERFs from other RadFems with whom we engaged who were trans*-positive\/neutral, because we had several years of history of engaging productively\/substantively with non-TERF RadFem\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Usage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labeling someone <strong>a trans-exclusionary<\/strong><\/strong> radical feminist on a whim is offensive. It is like labeling someone a racist. TERF is a slur, not slang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to be very careful when it comes to this term. Furthermore, this word can be labeled on any individual. As long as they are feminists who don\u2019t consider transgender women as women, they are TERFs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s world, <strong>it can be seen rampantly in social media<\/strong>. Many social media personalities and celebrities who are feminists have expressed their disapproval of the womanhood of trans women based on their biological s*x.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The list is quite extensive and will be discussed in the latter parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>What They Believe In<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To have a better understanding of <strong>what it means in all aspects<\/strong>, you have to get to know their beliefs. This section opens a lot of discussions and arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything that will be listed here is the truth and not up for interpretation. They also like to use biology to support their arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their simplistic view of womanhood all boils down to whether an individual was assigned female at birth or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Biology Versus Gender Identity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, they don\u2019t recognize <strong>the difference between biology and <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/gender-expression-vs-gender-identity-the-nuances\">gender identity<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To these people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re assigned female at birth, you\u2019re a woman<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re assigned male at birth, you\u2019re a man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>this belief is quite obsolete<\/strong> and has been debunked several times by science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/the-science-behind-transgender\">the science of transgenderism<\/a>, trans women have a similar brain pattern with cisgender women. Biologically, apart from the genitals and reproductive capabilities, transgender women share a lot of characteristics with cisgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[[SIGNUP]]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Negative Effects of Excluding Transgender Women<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <strong>TERFs claim that they\u2019re not discriminating against trans women<\/strong>, their indirect actions of \u201cprotecting women&#8217;s rights\u201d prove to be harmful to transgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are they discounting the womanhood of trans women, but they\u2019re also discounting the manhood of trans men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enhanced Discrimination<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While transgender women are <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/trans-rights-around-the-world\">fighting for trans rights<\/a>, they\u2019re also fighting for women\u2019s rights. By doing so, they are indirectly battling against the fight of trans women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are indirectly <strong>encouraging people to close their ears to what trans women have to say<\/strong>. Their actions further the unnecessary discussions on whether transwomen can :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>enter women\u2019s bathrooms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compete in women\u2019s beauty pageants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>change their legal documents for their appropriate gender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be respected as women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lessened Dignity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of what makes TERFs are cisgender women. The adult industry is very inclusive and seems like the only option that they feel they\u2019ll be qualified to be in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Invalidated Womanhood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A transgender woman does not like to be identified other than being a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If others do not recognize her womanhood, <strong>she will feel out of place<\/strong>. It also makes them think that they belong to another gender that they really don\u2019t identify with, making them think lowly of their existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How TERF are harming Transgender Individuals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think that <strong>they are just fighting for what they believe in<\/strong>. They don\u2019t mind sharing a bathroom. However, some cisgender women who are <strong>TERFs assert their beliefs by publicly humiliating transgender women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been many recorded incidents showing how transgender women are dragged out of the women\u2019s bathroom because of \u201cinconvenience\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most hurtful scenarios that a transgender woman can go through is <strong>being verbally excluded by someone<\/strong>. A lot of transgender women work very hard to form relationships and friendships, only to find out at the end of the day that their friends and family still don\u2019t see them as a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hurts because out of all the people that they\u2019re going to get flak from, it\u2019s from people who should know and understand them the most. It\u2019s people who have been with her while she\u2019s living as a woman; the supposedly witnesses for why she should be considered a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Influence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, in today\u2019s world, <strong>people can still be easily influenced<\/strong>. Their moral compasses and guilt can still be easily manipulated by celebrities and famous people. This is true and is apparent most especially in social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>famous TERFs use their influence<\/strong> and following to indirectly spread hate against transgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Well-known Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To further expound on the last section, this guide will feature well-known trans-exclusionary radical feminists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>J.K. Rowling<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>J.K. Rowling<\/strong> may well be <strong>the most famous TERF in the world<\/strong>. She does not skip a beat when it comes to voicing out her opinions against transgender women. She is claiming that she is not transphobic but her tweets show otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"744\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/01\/J.K._Rowling_TERF-edited.jpg\" alt=\"J.K. Rowling\" class=\"wp-image-2996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/01\/J.K._Rowling_TERF-edited.jpg 744w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/01\/J.K._Rowling_TERF-edited-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Most recently, she shared a link to a shop with her followers. <strong>The shop sells badges with messages such as \u201cNotorius Transphobe\u201d and \u201cF*ck your <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/the-international-pronouns-day\">Pronouns<\/a>\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has also argued that people who menstruate are women which received a lot of flak from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>transgender men<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/all-about-gender-non-conformity\">non-binary individuals<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and cisgender women who don\u2019t menstruate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kellie-Jay Keen Minshull (Posie Parker)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of <strong>the most controversial celebs called a TERF <\/strong>is <strong>Posie Parker<\/strong>. She\u2019s a UK activist who made a scandal through a live video. She broadcasted a Facebook live video while harassing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/allisonnorlian\/2020\/12\/09\/sarah-mcbride-talks-about-having-a-seat-at-the-table-as-the-first-trans-state-senator-in-us-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first transgender woman senator Sarah McBride<\/a> in her workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"545\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/08\/Posie_Parker_TERF-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Posie Parker\" class=\"wp-image-3792\" style=\"width:280px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/08\/Posie_Parker_TERF-edited.jpg 545w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/08\/Posie_Parker_TERF-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While McBride was sorting through photos, Parker aggressively misgendered her multiple times. She also demandingly asked McBride, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#dcb6ff\"><em>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you care about lesbian girls at 14 getting double mastectomies? Why don\u2019t you care about that Sarah?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201clesbians\u201d Parker was referring to are transgender men transitioning surgically as they do not identify as women. This just goes to show one of the classic examples of <strong>how TERFs are ignorant<\/strong> about <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/whats-the-difference-between-gender-and-sex\">sexual orientation vs. gender identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Fight Them<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>many ways to battle these people<\/strong>. One does not have to join parades if they do not feel the need to.
