Sadly, in 2021, belonging to <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/what-is-lgbttqqiaap\">the LGBTQ+ community<\/a> can still prove to be fatal, most especially in countries whereby same-sex relationships are <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/trans-rights-around-the-world\">criminalized by law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, you\u2019re going to learn <strong>the importance of the National Coming Out Day<\/strong> and everything encompassing this monumental event for people who are finally getting the courage to come out of the closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the National Coming Out Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, this day is celebrated by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lesbian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bisexual<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transgender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pansexual<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/what-is-queer-and-are-you-one\">Queer individuals<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For living their truths and stepping away from the dark and hopeless place called the closet. The closet is used as a metaphor for individuals who are still not out and living their lives openly based on their genuine <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/whats-the-difference-between-gender-and-sex\">gender or sexuality<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also an essential day whereby basic information on coming out and personal experiences are shared to <strong>inspire people who are still afraid<\/strong> of what may happen if they choose to live their lives the way they want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Coming Out Day (NCOD) was <strong>inaugurated in 1988<\/strong> by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Rw_feIhJgCA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Eichberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qsaltlake.com\/news\/2016\/10\/24\/lgbt-history-month-jean-oleary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean O\u2019 Leary<\/a>. Robert Eichberg was a psychologist from New Mexico. He\u2019s also the founder of the personal growth workshop called \u201cThe Experience\u201d. He passed away in 1995 due to complications involving AIDS.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Origins-edited.jpg\" alt=\"LGBT woman\" class=\"wp-image-4040\" style=\"width:280px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Origins-edited.jpg 455w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Origins-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Leary on the other hand was an openly lesbian leader in politics. She was also a well-known and long-time activist from New York. In 1988, she was the head of the National Gay Rights Advocates in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because both of them and their LGBT activist friends believed that there was no point in responding defensively to anti-LGBT sentiments, they chose to create NCOD instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They believe that it is a better catalyst to maintain positivity and celebrating coming out while sending an important message to the general public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NCOD is celebrated <strong>every October 11<\/strong> because it\u2019s also the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Popularity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It was originally administered from the West Hollywood offices of the National Gay Rights Advocates but was soon followed by the participation of eighteen other states, making it a hot topic and given national coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one statement about the NCOD, Eichberg said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#dcb6ff\"><em>\u201cMost people think they don&#8217;t know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact, everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"519\" height=\"692\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Popularity-edited.jpg\" alt=\"LGBT People\" class=\"wp-image-4042\" style=\"width:280px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Popularity-edited.jpg 519w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Popularity-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In its second year, the participants grew to 21 states and the headquarters was moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. But it didn\u2019t stop there as it <strong>became international after the 1990 media push<\/strong> when seven more countries participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, NCOD is working together with the Human Rights Campaign and it\u2019s observed globally by <strong>more than 20 countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[[SIGNUP]]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How It\u2019s Celebrated<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>numerous ways to celebrate NCOD<\/strong>. Most especially in today\u2019s world (2021) whereby the COVID-19 pandemic is enforcing a \u201cnew normal\u201d kind of lifestyle. However, before the devastating global outbreak, it was celebrated in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"444\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/How_it_s_Celebrated-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Coming out day celebration\" class=\"wp-image-4044\" style=\"width:280px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/How_it_s_Celebrated-edited.jpg 444w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/How_it_s_Celebrated-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Over the last 15 years, <strong>a chosen theme<\/strong> was used for every National Coming Out Day. The Human Rights Campaign chose the theme \u201cComing Out Still Matters\u201d in 2013 and 2014, while the earliest theme was \u201cCome Out To Congress\u201d in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also select different spokespersons per NCOD. Some of the popular names included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0124873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan Butler<\/a>, an actor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0106004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the hit TV show \u201cFrasier\u201d<\/a> and Candance Gingrich, who is the half-sister of Newt Gingrich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is typically done by the participants wearing rainbow ribbons and pins while joining in speak-outs, workshops, rallies, and other events. However, the events that happen are all <strong>highly reliant on the annual theme<\/strong> of the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NCOD Themes Over the Years<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1999: Come Out to Congress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2000: Think it O-o-ver (Who Will Pick the New Supremes?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2001: An Out Odyssey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2002: Being Out Rocks!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2003: It&#8217;s a Family Affair<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2004: Come Out. Speak Out. Vote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2005\u20132007: Talk About It<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2009: Conversations from the Heart<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2010\u20132011: Coming Out for Equality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2012: Come Out. Vote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2013\u20132014: Coming Out Still Matters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Goal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s done yearly to celebrate coming out and to <strong>raise awareness on different issues that involve the LGBTQ community<\/strong> and the civil rights movement. Some of the symbols that can be used aside from rainbow ribbons and pins are pink triangles and rainbow flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Criticisms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amidst its success, it also faced backlash most especially from people who don\u2019t belong to the LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the day was not created to be an aggressive form of movement, some groups and individuals still had <strong>some negative notions about it<\/strong> saying that the \u201choliday\u201d perpetuates homonormativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are also others from the LGBTQIA+ community who view the day in a different light. One in particular is a queer writer named <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/prestonmitchum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Preston Mitchum<\/a>, who wrote \u201cOn National Coming Out Day, Don\u2019t Disparage The Closet\u201d, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2013\/10\/on-national-coming-out-day-dont-disparage-the-closet\/280469\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an article published in the Atlantic in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Criticisms-edited.jpg\" alt=\"LGBT Couple\" class=\"wp-image-4046\" style=\"width:280px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Criticisms-edited.jpg 450w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/10\/Criticisms-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>His article talked about the assumptions that NCOD makes. While he applauds people who have chosen to come out, he also wrote how to some individuals, <strong>coming out may not always be safe for everyone<\/strong>, especially those who live in marginalized communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also added that <strong>coming out can result in hypervisibility<\/strong> for people who have intersecting identities which could lead to them, being discriminated in the workplace, criminalized, exiled from their families, and victims of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Celebrating NCOD Post Pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating the National Coming Out Day can still be done online. There are many LGBTQIA+ Facebook groups planning to celebrate the day virtually.
