A lot of you <strong>may be confused<\/strong> because the semantics seem to keep piling on top of each other when the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> century arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you have <strong>5 minutes to spare<\/strong> to read this guide, you will find that the reason behind these changes is not trivial and will compel you to jump on the bandwagon to inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Definition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-neutral language, also referred to as gender-inclusive language is <strong>a language that protects individuals of a particular sex or social gender from bias<\/strong>. In the English language, it includes nouns that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have no specificity in pertaining to jobs or roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>formation of phrases in a coequal manner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>and it eradicates the long-time usage of male terms as a form of blanket nouns for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime examples of specificity in pertaining to jobs are the nouns <em>actor<\/em> and<em> policewoman<\/em>. The corresponding gender-neutral terms for the two mentioned would be <em>artist<\/em> and <em>police officer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Usage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are more examples of how this language is used. <strong>You may be confused<\/strong> because a lot of people will immediately result in assuming a person\u2019s gender based on how they present themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Question_mark-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Question mark in a graffiti-covered tunnel\" class=\"wp-image-7839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Question_mark-edited.jpg 900w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Question_mark-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Question_mark-edited-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Question mark &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/question-mark-neon-signage-8xAA0f9yQnE\">unsplash.com<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But not because a person dresses in a conventional <em>manly<\/em> or <em>womanly<\/em> manner means that they fall under <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/all-about-gender-non-conformity\">the gender binary<\/a>. The only person who can identify the gender of oneself is themself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still confused? Here are some samples that will help you not offend or assume the gender-inclusive language that an individual prefers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chairman (component is <em>man<\/em>) and Chairwoman (component is <em>woman<\/em>) are both using terms from the common gender binary. These can be replaced with Chairperson instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Husband (man) and Wife (woman) refer to a married couple falling between the gender binary. Partner\/s can be in replacement should the couple or one of them identify neither as a man or a woman.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Masculine Blanket Language<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For hundreds of years, <strong>the patriarchal society<\/strong> has established itself as the representation of the people. This is why even some women are referred to with masculine pronouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 70s, the notion that parts of <strong>the English language were sexist<\/strong> was brought to mainstream attention in Western English cultures. However, retaliation happened and the guidelines also sparked debate on whether or not the enforcement of non-sexist language should take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feminist Maja S. Blauberg from Britain countered 8 commonly used oppositional arguments in 1980.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New South Wales. Australia, required the usage of <em>they<\/em> instead of <em>she<\/em> and <em>he <\/em>in subsequent laws in 1983.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Canadian Corporation for Studies in Religion (CCSR) passed a motion for all its upcoming publications to use non-sexist language instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic institutions in Britain and Canada implement policies that are non-sexist in 1985.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Handbook of Nonsexist Writing<\/em> and <em>The A-Z of Non-Sexist Language<\/em> by Women\u2019s Press Publications were made to deradicalize original works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just recently, the State of New York enacted its policy of using gender-neutral terms such as firefighter and police officer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>[[SIGNUP]]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Negative Impacts of Using the Wrong Pronouns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the wrong pronouns <strong>invalidates a person\u2019s existence<\/strong>. The bigots create a mockery out of a person who prefers to be addressed with <em>they<\/em>, <em>them<\/em>, <em>their<\/em>, instead of the regular <em>he<\/em>, <em>his<\/em>, <em>him<\/em> and <em>she<\/em>, <em>her<\/em>, <em>hers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 21<sup>st<\/sup> century has created many jokes starting with the statement \u201cI Identify as\u201d and follows it with an object or an animal. Some of these jokes go along the lines of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I identify as a watermelon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m not a man, I identify as a 100 dollar bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please don\u2019t call me mam, I\u2019m a non-binary buffalo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These jokes are as downright infuriating as being misgendered and misidentified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Negative Impacts of Having a Contradictory Name to a Trans Person and a Gender Non-conforming Individual<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are the non-binary individuals experiencing bigotry and ridicule. Transgender people go through it a lot of times as well. Here are examples of how having the wrong name, language, and pronoun can result in negative implications to do the day-to-day lives of trans and non-binary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. A transgender woman in a clinic is waiting for her turn to get her blood tested. Because of the clinic\u2019s lack of advanced systems, the nurses shout the names from the files to alert the patients that it\u2019s their turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Patient Joshua Bryant! Paging patient Joshua Bryant<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She stands up and people look at her either laughingly or confused. This can even get worse if the nurse decides to add the \u201cMister\u201d title on their roll call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. A non-binary individual presents themselves in a \u201cmasculine\u201d way but they\u2019re not comfortable in being called a <em>dude<\/em>, <em>bro<\/em>, or <em>man<\/em>. But their friends disregard their preference and keep using incorrect language. It will feel as though the individual\u2019s existence wasn\u2019t acknowledged and could lead to destroying the friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Celebrities who prefer gender-neutral terms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-inclusive language <strong>isn\u2019t just the buzzword<\/strong>. It has been repressed for so many years because of society\u2019s dictatorship on what it prefers to exist. But in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, that\u2019s gradually changing and even some celebrities have stepped out of their shadows to show the world their real identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Demi Lovato<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They are probably one of the most controversial gender non-binary individuals in showbiz.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Demi_Lovato-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Demi Lovato\" class=\"wp-image-7844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Demi_Lovato-edited.jpg 900w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Demi_Lovato-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/Demi_Lovato-edited-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Demi Lovato &#8211; Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6p3sQXsaDT\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@ddlovato<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>They started as a Disney star, playing a conventional role of a leading lady. And eventually became a big singing sensation subsequent to the success of Camp Rock.
