It\u2019s a day when activists and trans advocates raise awareness about the pressing issues that surround the transgender community. This is done through education, gatherings, and TDOR-related activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back to Trans Awareness Week, it\u2019s <strong>a week-long celebration<\/strong> that\u2019s held by third parties through different events in different venues. This also includes remote celebrations which are done online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main central venue also changes every year upon the decision of the main organization that handles the paramount celebrations for trans awareness week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans awareness week has many purposes. It\u2019s not just about celebrating and raising awareness about the negativity that surrounds the lives of transgender people. It also educates people outside of the community about <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/transgender-issues-you-must-know\">the issues<\/a> involving the transition or identity of trans individuals and <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/all-about-gender-non-conformity\">gender non-conforming people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before getting to the nitty-gritty of how you can participate in Transgender Awareness Week 2021, <strong>you have to know how it started<\/strong> and the factors that contributed to cementing it as an important annual celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"985\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/11\/History-edited.jpg\" alt=\"rainbow paint\" class=\"wp-image-4183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/11\/History-edited.jpg 985w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/11\/History-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/11\/History-edited-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-20544095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christine Jorgensen<\/a> (1952) \u2013 she\u2019s the first transgender woman who was publicly known to <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/what-to-expect-from-a-transgender-surgery\">have undergone gender reassignment surgery<\/a>. Her coming out was featured by different American media outlets which provided people access and knowledge about transgender issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/05\/obituaries\/roberta-cowell-overlooked.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roberta Cowell<\/a> (1954) \u2013 she\u2019s the U.K. counterpart of Christine Jorgensen. Her story of having a gender reaffirming surgery (GRS) has gained a lot of public interest in the nation as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/transgenderarchives\/collections\/reed-erickson\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reed Erickson<\/a> (1964) \u2013 a trans man and the creator of Erickson Educational Foundation which is the first foundation to promote transgender and gay equality. It also donated a lot within the community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1972, the country Sweden legalized changing the s*x markers in birth certificates of transgender individuals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1975, Dr. Trudy Kennedy and Dr. Herbert Bower established the first clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/the-gender-dysphoria-guide-and-what-you-must-know\">for gender dysphoria<\/a> named Gender Dysphoria Clinic at the Queen Victoria Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Victorian Transsexual Coalition and Victorian Transsexual Association were formed in 1979. They were the first <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/trans-rights-around-the-world\">trans rights<\/a> and advocacy organizations in Australia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A BBC Documentary entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt14899816\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Change of Sex<\/a>,<\/em> which featured the male-to-female transition journey of a trans woman named Julia Grant aired in 1979.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FTM International, the first advocacy group for transgender men was founded by Lou Sullivan in 1986. Its purpose was to negate the notion that trans men were all lesbians before deciding to transition into a male.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On November 28, 1998, a trans woman named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/her-death-sparked-transgender-day-remembrance-22-years-later-still-n1233809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rita Hester<\/a> was violently murdered because of her <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/gender-expression-vs-gender-identity-the-nuances\">gender identity<\/a>. It was followed by a candlelight vigil on December 4, thus, the birth of the first idea of the first International Transgender Day of Remembrance led by a trans woman named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/gwendolyn-ann-smith-interview-transgender-day-of-remembrance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gwendolyn Ann Smith<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1999, Calpernia Addams became the talk of the nation when her boyfriend PFC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2000\/05\/kentucky-murder-200005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barry Winchell was murdered<\/a> after his colleagues found out that he was dating her (a transgender woman).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first observance of the International Transgender Day of Remembrance in commemoration of victims of anti-transgender violence took place on November 20, 1999.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/transgenderlawcenter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Transgender Law Center<\/a> was founded in 2002. It aims to alter laws and notions of people regarding transgender individuals so the latter could live a life without discrimination based on their gender identities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/srlp.org\/about\/\">The Sylvia Rivera Law Project<\/a> was founded in 2002. It provides legal and educational services which aim to alter policies that curtail the progress of trans people\u2019s dream of gender equality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transgender activist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachelcrandall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rachel Crandall<\/a> from Michigan created <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/all-about-transgender-day-of-visibility\">the International Transgender Day of Visibility<\/a> on November 20, 2009. It\u2019s the counterpart of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Feel free to get your gang to make popcorn and binge-watch these.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for social media groups of organizations that help transgender people and find an event near you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think of creative ways on how you could celebrate your gender identity if you\u2019re a trans person.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp; <strong>How to Celebrate Trans Awareness Week during Covid-19<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But of course, we\u2019re all aware that COVID-19 situations are different for various countries so if you\u2019re in a place where mass gatherings aren\u2019t allowed, try the different ways below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend a Trans Awareness Week near you (only if you\u2019re fully vaccinated).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Join online events that are related to the trans awareness week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post Transgender content on your timeline for the whole trans awareness week and have your friends\u2019 interest in the lives of trans people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gush about your favorite trans media or influencers and share them on your timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.<\/strong>&nbsp; <strong>How to celebrate transgender week as an organization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you a member of an organization or a company that\u2019s trans-inclusive, if so, let the people in charge be aware of <strong>how important this week is<\/strong> for trans people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a trans awareness week raffle and give out prizes.
