After all, knowing the meaning behind these semantics are not only helpful in enriching one\u2019s vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having knowledge about these words aid in respecting and avoiding other individuals. <strong>AFAB and AMAB<\/strong> are usually used with the presence of transgenderism and non-binary discussions. To learn more about their interconnectedness, keep reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please know that we do not claim to be a scholastic resource. Let\u2019s begin with their descriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does AFAB mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AFAB\u2019s meaning is quite easy to grasp because it\u2019s an acronym. It stands for <strong>Assigned Female at Birth<\/strong>. This is why the doctors assign our genders and put M or F on our birth certificates based on what\u2019s between our legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So to explain the necessity succinctly, when someone is confused in a conversation between a <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/all-about-gender-non-conformity\">non-binary<\/a>\/transgender person with someone who\u2019s wondering whether the trans or non-binary individual was born with a peen or vaj, they can simply say\u2026 \u201cI\u2019m AFAB\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m AMAB\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does AMAB mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know the meaning of AFAB, AMAB\u2019s meaning will be much easier to grasp because it\u2019s just the <em>opposite<\/em> version. This acronym stands for <strong>Assigned Male at Birth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to situations wherein some people just want to be privy with what\u2019s between a person\u2019s legs, using AFAB and AMAB are also helpful in medical diagnoses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Origins of AFAB and AMAB?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Cosmopolitan magazine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/sexopedia\/a38294924\/afab-amab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with Claudia Johnson<\/a>, a relationship, intimacy, and s*x therapist, both acronyms are the latest iterations of CAMAB. The latter means <strong>Coercively Assigned Male at Birth<\/strong>, which stemmed from transgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAMAB, she explained, is <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>a term coined by trans women to express the violence of being forced against their will into a male gender role.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The word was so compelling that it was adopted by intersex activists as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There has been an investment in studying gendered linguistics without focusing on the binary, or at <em>least to move away from gender normativity.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Lucie Fielding, a s*x educator and the author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/55826238-trans-sex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trans S*x: Clinical Approaches to Trans Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments<\/a><\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Some folks are really comfortable with [AFAB and AMAB] and really like them, and some of us are already looking for the next term that will be more nuanced and that will allow more people to feel seen and heard and held.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>[[SIGNUP]]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it time to stop using the word <em>Cisgender<\/em> because of AFAB and AMAB?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/gender-expression-vs-gender-identity-the-nuances\">gender identity<\/a> doesn\u2019t fall under the rainbow, you may still use Cisgender to pertain to yourself if you\u2019re an individual who identifies with your assigned gender at birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, these terminologies weren\u2019t created to <strong>replace what already works<\/strong>. That\u2019s instituting a power dynamic, and so often power dynamics are unseen. When we create new terms\u2014when we nuance language and rhetoric\u2014we are giving ourselves ways of interrogating power and deciding.\u2013 Is this who we want to be?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who uses the words AFAB and AMAB?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, everyone can use these terms. We\u2019re all assigned female or male whether <strong>by doctors, nurses, midwives, or our parents<\/strong>. But to give further clarity on who uses these terms the most, they\u2019re transgender or non-binary individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"LGBT Flag\" class=\"wp-image-1146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/LGBT-Flag.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, their physical looks appear too strongly of how a <em>typical<\/em> male or female looks, that in conversations when they reveal that they\u2019re transgender or non-binary, some can get confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFAB and AMAB come <strong>very helpful in these situations<\/strong>. Also, some people who aren\u2019t very adept in English can experience language barriers and AFAB and AMAB are more specific when translated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternatives to AFAB and AMAB<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not because groups of people are comfortable with using the terms AFAB and AMAB, means that it\u2019s something that\u2019s comfortably utilized by the whole gender spectrum. Some, who are not okay with the reinforcement of the gender binary words female and male, prefer other terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@transstyleguide\/alternatives-to-afab-and-amab-d7cf8fe20a72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an article on Medium<\/a>, written by @hologram in their Trans Style Guide section,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>I have been trying to describe myself in less bioessentialist ways. I think the best solution I have worked out so far is to describe what I have moved away from, what I am moving towards, and how I present. For example, I would say \u2018I have transitioned away from femininity, I have transitioned towards androgyny, and I present as an androgynous butch.\u2019. Instead of saying \u2018I\u2019m afab\u2019 or \u2018I guess? I\u2019m transmasculine?\u2019 I have expressed what I have moved away from (coerced femininity) and expressed who I am now without at any point reverting back to a belief in biologically female. I would not describe my biology as female either. Not just because I\u2019m on T, but because I reject female as existing. I have hormones, and body parts, and needs absolutely. I\u2019m not saying those don\u2019t exist. What I am saying is that there\u2019s nothing female about them.
