She grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, and her parents were really accomplished in their fields. She played football, baseball (she was so good the New York Yankees wanted her), and&nbsp;<strong>she was great at tennis<\/strong>&nbsp;and swimming too. But even though the Yankees wanted her to play baseball for them, she decided to focus on tennis instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After finishing high school, she went to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yale.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yale University<\/a>. At Yale, she was&nbsp;<strong>the leader of the men&#8217;s tennis team<\/strong>&nbsp;and was so good that some people thought she was one of the best college tennis players in the whole country. Once she got her degree from Yale, she went to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the University of Rochester Medical Center<\/a>&nbsp;to learn about eye health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She graduated from there in 1959 and&nbsp;<strong>worked as an ophthalmologist trainee<\/strong>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lenoxhill.northwell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lenox Hill Hospital<\/a>&nbsp;in New York for two years. She also continued to play tennis while in the Navy. In fact, she was so good that she won both the singles and doubles competitions at the All Navy Championship, thanks to her powerful left-handed serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her time in the Navy, she was ranked as&nbsp;<strong>high as fourth in her region<\/strong>&nbsp;among tennis players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children, Transition, and Divorce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After leaving the military, she realized that she couldn&#8217;t&nbsp;<strong>keep hiding who she truly was<\/strong>. She started getting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/what-is-transgender-hormone-replacement-therapy\">hormone injections<\/a>&nbsp;and began living as a woman in Europe. She even planned to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/what-to-expect-from-a-transgender-surgery\">have surgery<\/a>&nbsp;in Morocco to change her body to match her true self. But when she saw the conditions at the clinic in Morocco, she decided to go back to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1970, Ren\u00e9e met and married a woman named Barbara Mole. They had a son two years later but got divorced in 1975. Ren\u00e9e didn&#8217;t want to do that, so she didn&#8217;t qualify to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she didn&#8217;t give up. Instead, she sued the USTA, saying they were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/gender-discrimination-is-still-prevalent\">discriminating against her because of her gender identity<\/a>. And guess what?&nbsp;<strong>She won the lawsuit<\/strong>. This was a big moment for transgender rights in sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ren\u00e9e played tennis professionally from 1977 to 1981 until she retired at the age of 47. At her best, she was&nbsp;<strong>ranked as high as 20th overall in the world<\/strong>, and her highest end-of-year ranking was&nbsp;<strong>22nd in 1977<\/strong>. She also&nbsp;<strong>won the women&#8217;s singles for players aged 35 and over at the U.S. Open in 1979<\/strong>. Ren\u00e9e was twice a semifinalist in mixed doubles at the U.S. Open, playing alongside Ilie N\u0103stase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1979, she defeated Nancy Richey to&nbsp;<strong>win the singles title for players aged 35 and over at the U.S. Open<\/strong>. Ren\u00e9e achieved victories over several top players during her career, including Hana Mandl\u00edkov\u00e1, Sylvia Hanika, Virginia Ruzici, and Pam Shriver. Later on, she worked as a coach and helped Martina Navratilova win two Wimbledon titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Second Serve and More<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1983, Ren\u00e9e wrote a book about her life called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/2643509-second-serve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Second Serve<\/a>,&#8221; where&nbsp;<strong>she talked about her journey<\/strong>. In 2021, she added to her life story with a book called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/59965840-1999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diary 1999: An Eye-Opening Medical Memoir<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ren\u00e9e&#8217;s first book &#8220;Second Serve&#8221; was the basis for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0091913\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a movie with the same name<\/a>. There&#8217;s also a documentary about her called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1869648\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ren\u00e9e<\/a>,&#8221; made by Eric Drath in 2011, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tribecafilm.com\/news\/512c0edc1c7d76d9a9000668-renee-be-who-you-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was shown on ESPN<\/a>.
