Trans meetups in Japan

Updated on

Japan is known for its unique blend of traditional and modern culture. You might expect this to reflect in their stance on LGBT issues. But reality is more complex. Japanese society still holds mixed views on the LGBT community. There is much room for improvement in terms of LGBT rights. Until then, trans women in Japan and their allies will have to keep fighting for equality.

Getting to know trans women in Japan

Historically, Japan has accepted gender fluidity in traditional art forms. In Kabuki theater, men often played female roles. But, that doesn’t mean that being transgender is accepted in modern society. Trans women still encounter discrimination in Japan. Some choose to come out when they are passing enough to avoid discrimination.

But there is hope for Japan. In 2023, the requirements for legal gender change were deemed unconstitutional. So legal gender change was granted for a trans woman without gender-affirming surgery. This is one big step towards a better life for trans women in Japan.
