Meeting trans women in Taiwan

Taiwan is famous for its bustling night markets and mouthwatering cuisine. But did you know that Taiwan is the most LGBT-friendly country in East Asia? The first Taiwan Pride happened in Taipei in 2003. That’s progressive considering that was already 20 years ago.

And in 2019, Taiwan made history by having the second-largest LGBT pride in Asia after Tel Aviv. Taiwan is progressive compared to its neighboring countries. In Asia, it’s one of the better places to live for trans people.

Getting to know trans women in Taiwan

Trans women in Taiwan have a better quality of life than most places in Asia. Taiwan was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in Asia. So it’s not difficult for trans women to get married even if they haven’t changed their legal markers yet.

The Taiwanese government also is progressive when it comes to trans rights. They continue to review and change laws to make it easier for trans people to live. In 2021, a Taiwanese court pushed to abolish gender-reassignment surgery as a requirement for legal gender change. So this can only mean that trans women’s quality of life can only improve from here.
